"The more you leave out, the more authentic and better the taste becomes," is the motto of the "Bread Purists" from Speyer in Rhineland-Palatinate. Sebastian Däuwel offers just four types of bread in his shop and from his bread truck. This career changer founded the "Bread Purists" in 2016 together with a master baker. However, October 11, 2018, wasn't quite so purist for the founder, as Däuwel won the state-level KfW Award for Start-ups in 2018.

The owner and founder of Brotpuristen is Sebastian Däuwel, a business graduate. His hobby was baking sourdough bread. He turned this passion into a profession by founding the company in 2016, opening his business with a visible bakery. He employs two master bakers, a journeyman baker, and another bakery assistant. Four different loaves of bread are baked daily from Tuesday to Friday. The product range includes eight varieties.
Unconventional working hours
The team's work is characterized by an unconventional approach. Opening hours from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ensure pleasant working hours, fresh bread is available after work, and the reservation system minimizes returns.
Most important to the founder, however, is the uncompromising quality of the bread, which is ensured by reducing the ingredients to the bare essentials and using home-grown sourdough.
Demand is constantly growing: A bread truck is now on the road
Demand has grown steadily since the opening, so that the initial hobby bakery is now outgrowing its infancy. A move to new, significantly larger premises is imminent. In addition, a Bread truck on the street, with which the company's purist bread is also sold outside of Speyer. The location of the truck has been Bread Purist "fans" on Facebook self-determined.
Sebastian Däuwel: "We've set our sights on baking truly excellent bread. Because it tastes incredibly good and smells incredibly wonderful, we're doing everything we can to bring the pleasure and joy of real, authentic bread back to the public. We believe the more you remove, the clearer and more distinctive the flavor becomes. Our homemade sourdough made from flour and water, along with the dough's extensive fermentation time, ensures long-lasting freshness. Because each loaf is individually handcrafted, no two are alike. We're delighted that our concept not only appeals to our customers but has also been recognized with the KfW award."
Since 1998, the KfW Banking Group has honored companies in their first five years of business with the KfW Award Gründen (formerly known as the "Gründer Champion"). Entrepreneurs from all industries can apply for the award. Successors are also welcome to participate.
