With the new Renault 5, the French are reviving their once iconic car. Visually, it pays homage to its famous predecessor, but the technology is modern. We took the little electric Gaul for a spin.

1972when flared trousers and short skirts were in fashion, presented Renault the R5The small car offered space for four adults and captured the spirit of the times. Its sleek design with its colorful paint scheme was a hit. The cute Renault 5 was right on trend and considered a cult classic until its production ended in 1994.

Now the new edition of the classic small car is set to seamlessly continue the success story. Renault 5 E-Tech Electric presents itself with an appealing retro design and immediately attracts attention during our test drive through the South of France. The reactions are consistently positive: People turn around to look at the electric Gaul, smile at the little beauty, and give it a thumbs-up. Words like "très chic" and "magnifique" are repeatedly mentioned. Hardly any other car has garnered as much positive attention as the Renault 5.

The R5 is based on the new Renault AmpR Small platform and is equipped with just under 1.500 kilograms, quite light for an electric carHowever, the charging hatch is located on the left side, which isn't always ideal. However, the electric Gaul boasts many nice details.

For example, a Charging indicator, which is prominently integrated into the hood. The display shows the State of Charge (SoC) The battery charge level can be read from the outside in the form of a sketched "5." Each bar represents 20 percent of the battery capacity. Of course, the charge level can also be checked from the inside or via a smartphone app. A nice unique selling point. The interior is colorful, at least when the R5, like our yellow test car, is in the Equipment variant "Iconic Five" Then the door panels and seats are covered in yellow materials, which, like the Techno model variant, are made from 100 percent recycled material. For friends of long white bread Renault offers a woven baguette basket as a practical transport solution It's hooked into the center console on the passenger side and keeps the flour from the white bread off the seats. Another nice detail.

The interior of the French car features a lot of hard plastic, but the overall ambience feels quite solid and contemporary. The driver looks at a easy-to-read instrument cluster and the one to the right Multimedia display is easy to use thanks to Google integration. In addition, the R5 has a total 26 available assistance systems on the safe side and drives semi-autonomously according to Level 2.

In terms of space, everything is fine in the front. The front seats, modeled after the legendary R5 Turbo 2, also prove to be quite comfortable. In the back, however, there is only enough space for the youngstersAdults lack knee room, and their feet cannot be pushed properly under the front seats. This electric city car is therefore rather for a stable relationship, since the Trunk volume of 326 liters not generous, but still sufficient. The R5 is a small car. high loading sillThat makes it difficult to lug bulky luggage? Okay, no problem.

The R5 is the first Renault model to have a virtual companion on board. digital avatar is called "Reno" and provides the appropriate answer to general questions. In addition, the voice assistant Tips to increase comfort or, for example, the electric range. Unfortunately, the digital assistant wasn't activated in our car yet, so we couldn't test its functionality. We'll cover this in detail in a later review.

Less nice: When you get into the little French car, you immediately notice the many steering column levers around the steering wheel.f. In addition to the classic turn signal lever on the left, there are three more on the right. The obligatory windshield wiper lever is now joined by the radio satellite, familiar from various Renault models, and the gear selector lever. The principle, already familiar from the Megane E-Tech, causes a certain amount of overload and has an just as overloaded, like an old-fashioned party Mettigel from the 1960s. A more clever layout would have been better.

Driving the little beau is a huge pleasure. Steering works directly and speaks spontaneously, while the Chassis with McPherson struts at the front and a complex multi-link rear axle makes the French a light-footed corner robberThe agile handling ensures plenty of driving fun, without the French having overdone it, because at leisurely pace the Renault surprisingly offers smooth ride comfort.

The Renault 5 starts in the more powerful version with 110 kW (150 hp) at 26.378 euros (all prices net)The electric motor has a maximum Torque of 245 Nm and ensures fast driving performance. Top speed is 150 km/h electronically limited. Renault states the average fuel consumption as 15,2 kWh. A Entry-level engine with 70 kW (95 hp) is expected to follow this year, but will not be able to charge quickly, which is incomprehensible. Basic model at under 21.000 euros start, the middle drive variant with an output of 90 kW (122 hp) 23.016 euros.

The little Gaul will also be available in two different battery sizes. While the larger battery available at launch has a Capacity of 52 kWh The smaller version that was added later is 40 kWh. The maximum range is 312 and 405 kilometers respectivelyIf the storage depot is exhausted, the Renault needs 52 kWh battery at a fast charging station 30 minutesto push its batteries from 15 to 80 percent.

Around 4,5 hours pass on a wallbox with 11 kWto charge the batteries from 10 to 100 percent. Due to its lower capacity, the smaller battery can be fully charged in an hour. Furthermore, the Renault 5 supports bidirectional charging and can feed unused power back into the grid or, via an adapter, power electrical devices, such as a picnic grill on a trip with the little Frenchman.
