Motocross brakes for cargo bikes

Starting in 2023, Urban Arrow will deliver its commercial cargo bikes with the new Formula Motocross braking system.

What do cargo bikes have in common with motocross? This is the result of a cooperation with the Italian brake specialist Formula, which for decades innovative braking systems for motocross, mini-motocross and mountain biking. Now the engineers have developed the Formula braking system from the Mini-motocross successfully integrated into Urban Arrow’s cargo bikesThe Formula braking system, tailored for heavy cargo bike transport, will be available from the first quarter of 2023 exclusively in all Urban Arrow cargo bikes for business customers installed in the Cargo and Tender model series.

The system premiered at the IAA Transportation in Hanover. It is the world's first Motocross braking system for cargo bikes in the business customer sector. Analyses in the business customer sector had shown a need for this, as cargo bikes are increasingly being used for heavy transport tasks there. Especially on the famous "Last mile" Brakes are of vital importance to the customer. Their intensive use leads to faster wear and increased maintenance requirements. The result: high service costs and declining revenues because the vehicles are unavailable during maintenance.

"This is exactly where we started with our solution," says Frank Oudegeest, Director of Business Banking at Urban Arrow. "With the new Formula brakes we extend the necessary maintenance intervals: Instead of every 1.500 kilometers In the future, the Formula brakes on the Urban Arrow models of our business customers will only have to almost every 15.000 kilometers be maintained." The Dutch have thus increased the maintenance interval tenfold.

However, tests have shown that the running time can be significantly longer. "We are using the Formula brakes as part of a pilot test and the wheels of our Urban Arrow fleet are now at almost 20.000 kilometers, without maintenance interruption," explains Fons Kok, Lead Maintenance Engineer at the food logistics company TringTring in Amsterdam. Urban Arrow is one of the world's leading manufacturers of electric cargo bikes with well over 700 authorized dealers and over 42.000 bikes sold worldwide.
