For the health of mothers and newborns
With World Health Day, which takes place annually on April 7, the World Health Organization is dedicating itself to promoting the health of mothers and newborns in 2025.
This article is part of the special feature on women in the trades.
Every year on April 7th, World Health Day is dedicated to the health of all. The World Health Organization ( WHO ) commemorates its founding in 1948 with this day. Following the focus on the "Right to Health" in 2024 , the WHO will highlight the promotion of maternal and newborn health in 2025 with the motto " Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures".
The year-long campaign aims to urge governments and health professionals to do more to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths. It also seeks to prioritize the long-term health and well-being of women. Furthermore, the World Health Organization and its partners will raise awareness about supporting healthy pregnancies and births, as well as promoting postnatal health.
Five focus topics of the European campaign
According to the WHO, recent trends in Europe indicate a stagnation and even a decline in the health outcomes of mothers and newborns – despite past progress. The five key objectives of the WHO European Region for World Health Day 2025 comprise…
1. … combating the stagnation and deterioration of the health of mothers and newborns
In 2020, approximately 1.000 women died in the European Region due to complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Maternal mortality rates have now returned to pre-pandemic levels.
2. … financial security – i.e., affordable access to healthcare – for expectant and new mothers
According to the WHO, access to maternal health care should be a fundamental right, regardless of legal or financial status, social, or ethnic background. Financial barriers to access should be eliminated to ensure that all expectant and new mothers receive the care they need.
3. … the support and protection of midwives and birth attendants
With their expertise, midwives and obstetricians ensure the health of mothers and newborns – whether during pregnancy or during delivery. However, to maintain this high level of care, they require support, protection, and fair pay.
4. … the priority given to the mental health of pregnant women and new mothers
According to the World Health Organization, mental illness during pregnancy continues to pose a significant complication. The WHO therefore calls for routine care for expectant mothers that fully incorporates mental health support and enables proactive assessments and interventions.
5. ... zero tolerance for violence against pregnant women and mothers
Measures to protect mothers from violence should be taken through support systems for those affected and a promoted culture of respect and safety in the healthcare system.
