Start of apprenticeship: Entry into the skilled trades still possible

August 1st is traditionally the start date for the new training year. What many don't know: This isn't a fixed date – an apprenticeship can also begin after that. Often even into the autumn.

The traditional start date for an apprenticeship is August 1st. However, starting an apprenticeship in the skilled trades is also possible after that date. "Even those who decide at the last minute or start late still have the chance to begin this year. There's no reason to wait until next year to lay the foundation for your career," encourages Christian Weirich , Managing Director of the Mosel-Eifel-Hunsrück Region Chamber of Skilled Crafts (KH MEHR). Open apprenticeships can be found, for example, nationwide via the apprenticeship radar or the apprenticeship exchanges of the Chambers of Skilled Crafts.

"Anything is better than waiting. And anyone who wants to get their bearings first should definitely take advantage of the internship opportunities in their region." Christian Weirich added that the apprenticeship radar is also a good source for internships. 

Always a good starting point: an internship

For those who want to gain practical experience, internship weeks – or internship days in Rhineland-Palatinate – are a great opportunity. "The skilled trades offer attractive career opportunities. And the apprenticeship wages are also quite respectable. A lot has changed in this area in recent years," emphasizes Weirich. In the KH MEHR region of Rhineland-Palatinate alone, there are over 300 new apprentices starting their training on August 1st in a wide variety of skilled trades. "We'd welcome even more."
