Together with Fristads, the German trade journal "Handwerksblatt" launched the "Climate Savior Award for Crafts" in early March as part of the "Future of Crafts" initiative. Interview: Thomas Syring, Managing Director of Fristads DACH.
Thomas Syring , Managing Director of Fristads DACH , on the company's commitment to sustainability and why the Climate Savers Award for Crafts is currently an important signal to the public.
DHB: Mr. Syring, Fristads is a workwear manufacturer. What does workwear have to do with the climate?
Syring: Workwear is an essential part of our working world and therefore a consumer product. The manufacturing and production sites are usually not located in Germany. This means we have longer supply chains, which impacts our carbon footprint. But it's not just the carbon footprint; energy and, ultimately, water also influence our climate. We're addressing all three factors.
DHB: How can you prove the impact or savings that companies have by producing climate-friendly workwear?
Syring: We started thinking early on about how we could reduce water consumption in the production of our workwear. It's important to understand that a lot of water is needed to produce textiles. We have optimized our product development and material selection and can now offer our customers the following information with our Green Calculator (fristads.com/de-de/nachhaltigkeit) help you decide which items to choose in order to reduce water consumption and have a positive impact on the climate.
DHB: How did the idea for the Climate Savior Award for Crafts come about?
Syring: We see ourselves as part of the skilled trades industry with our very extensive product portfolio. For this reason, we considered how we could work with the skilled trades industry to create a win-win environment and climate situation. For us, nothing was more obvious than seeking to collaborate with the DHB to jointly realize the idea for this campaign.

DHB: Who can participate and what are the requirements?
Syring: We address the entire skilled trades sector, across all trades, i.e. all registered craft businesses that have set up their operations in a climate-friendly manner.
DHB: What can the award winners win?
Syring: We're giving away prizes totaling €20.000. The first prize winner will also receive a trip for two to Fristads headquarters in Borås, Sweden.
