Four state champions competed in Viereth-Trunstadt for the title of master brewer and maltster. In the end, Simon Schnüll from Bavaria took the crown. Second and third place went to Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony, respectively.
Four state champions from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saxony met on November 4th at the Kundmüller Brewery in Viereth-Trunstadt to determine the best brewer and maltster of 2025. As part of a comprehensive, multi-hour competition – consisting of a written exam in the areas of brewing theory and calculations, as well as several practical stations covering brewing raw materials, brewhouse, fermentation and storage, bottling, filtration, and dispensing technology – the independent expert jury had to determine the national champions of 2025. The examination committee included Peter Schaaf (Kundmüller Brewery), Roland Kundmüller (Kundmüller Brewery), Stefan Pfister (Pfister Inn Brewery), Kevin Düsel (Krug Geisfeld Brewery), Robert Pawelczak (Main-Spessart State Vocational School), Benedikt Meier-Bausewein (Private Breweries Bavaria), Oswald Kundmüller (Kundmüller Brewery) and Sebastian Haas (Schwind-Bräu).
Simon Schnüll ( trained at Brauhaus Nittenau ) from Bavaria can celebrate his victory as the new German Brewers and Maltsters Champion 2025. Niklas Engelberty ( trained at Brauerei Sander ) from Rhineland-Palatinate took second place at the German Championship . Lenz Marin Börner ( trained at Brauerei Bierblume) from Saxony came in third .
The state winner from Baden-Württemberg, Maximilian Hald ( training company: Härtsfelder Familienbrauerei Hald ), had to settle for the unenviable fourth place.
"The national competition showcases the high quality of training in our medium-sized breweries year after year. Each of the four state winners has demonstrated expertise, precision, and passion at the highest level. All participants in the national competition have impressively shown how future-proof the brewing and malting trade is," said Benedikt Meier-Bausewein of the organizing Association of Private Breweries Bavaria in a press release.
The awards ceremony for the skills competition will take place on December 5, 2025, in the Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main. During the event, the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) will honor the winners of the German Championship and the design competition "Good Design in Craftsmanship – Craftspeople Design".
