Mokka with rally genes

Opel has brought rally genes to the asphalt with its Mokka GSE. We drove the top-of-the-line electric model.

Retro is always a good thing when it brings proven values into the present. Opel did this with the abbreviation GSE , which once adorned the Opel Commodore and Monza models and stood for Grand Sport Injection. This, in turn, brought a gleam to the eyes of sport-oriented drivers – and the Rüsselsheim-based company revived this three years ago as Grand Sport Electric and has since established it as a sub-brand for sporty electric models.

From rally racing to asphalt

With the Opel Mokka GSE, this sub-brand reaches its current pinnacle, as the electric version of the Mokka has adapted all its driving characteristics directly from rally racing . "From rally to road," is how Opel describes its intention, and fittingly, it is presenting its latest addition at the Circuito del Madrid Jamara racetrack . The model for this electric sports car was the Mokka GSE Rally , which Opel specifically redesigned for rally use and which is scheduled to compete starting next year.

And yes, the engineers have done an excellent job. The 281 hp/207 kW engine delivers 345 Nm of torque to the asphalt, propelling the 1.672 kg Mokka GSE to 100 km/h in 5,9 seconds. Its top speed is 200 km/h. It could go faster, but it's electronically limited; after all, the maximum range of 336 km should n't be wasted.

54-kWh battery

The rally Opel draws its power from a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery . It can be charged with alternating current at 11 kW , or with direct current at a maximum of 100 kW . In this case, the battery takes approximately 27 minutes to charge from 20 to 80 percent. Opel states a consumption of 18,5 kWh per 100 kilometers.

The Mokka offers three driving modes: Eco, Normal , and – of course – Sport . Each of these modes alters the engine's power output and responsiveness. Only in Sport mode does the Mokka GSE reach its full power ; in Normal mode , its top speed is reduced to 180 km/h with a horsepower output of "only" 231 hp . In Eco mode, the top speed is also limited to 150 km/h with 180 hp . However, it's also true that if the driver uses kickdown for rapid acceleration, the GSE delivers its full power regardless of the driving mode.

Lots of driving fun guaranteed!

And that's precisely the appeal of the performance-tuned Mokka: the sheer driving pleasure. The steering is precise and direct , and the rear axle remains stable even during fast cornering. After all, the GSE sits ten millimeters lower to the ground than its conventional siblings, boasts more powerful brakes , and features specially designed axles with new hydraulic shock absorbers . The suspension is sportily tuned and includes a mechanical limited-slip differential , enabling truly spirited driving and allowing the driver to genuinely feel the rally DNA.

A fun car where even the elegant Alcantara sports seats , specially developed for the driver and front passenger, fit in nicely. The starting price of €39.747,90 (net) might initially seem steep, but it comes practically fully equipped. The price list only includes two options: a black-painted hood and a driver fatigue detection system – everything else is already standard.
