From April 11 to July 14, the German Football Museum in Dortmund will be supporting the 2024 European Championship in Germany with the football culture festival "Spielräume" and other events.
The UEFA European Championship 2024 will kick off in Munich on Friday, June 14th . The tournament will conclude with the final on Sunday, July 14th . As part of the accompanying program, the German Football Museum in Dortmund will host a diverse cultural festival , a theatrical performance , and an exhibition.
The " Spielräume " cultural festival kicks off on April 11, 2024. With over 60 events spanning theater, literature, film, television, and music, and featuring artists from across Europe, the program combines classical performance styles with popular formats. For example, the German Football Museum will host a Soccer Slam European Championship , and the Dortmund Philharmonic will provide live "commentary" on the European Championship group match between Spain and Italy through improvisations.
"In the year of EURO 2024, we are consciously thinking beyond the boundaries of specific disciplines . The trans-European concept is of particular importance ," explains Manuel Neukirchner, Director of the German Football Museum . "During the tournament, hundreds of thousands of people from all parts of Europe will visit our country, and especially the Rhine-Ruhr region with its four host cities in Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Düsseldorf, and Cologne. With our festival program, we want to build a cultural bridge to football and place a focus on art projects by European artists."

In the 1982 FIFA World Cup year , the semi-final match between Germany and France took place on July 8th in Seville, Spain . After falling behind 1-3, the German team managed to come back and ultimately win in a penalty shootout.
The documentary theatre piece " The Night of Seville: A Football Drama in Five Acts ," a project partnership with the Ruhr Festival Recklinghausen and supported by the Brost Foundation , brings this significant football match to the stage from a fresh perspective. Based on autobiographies, interviews, documentaries, newspaper reports, television broadcasts, and conversations between author Manuel Neukirchner and the protagonists of the time, the dialogues and monologues of the historical figures appearing in the play were written. The world premiere (already sold out) will take place on May 14, 2024, at 14 p.m. in Recklinghausen.
"The fact that football and theater are merging is an exciting experiment . A classical tragedy ends with the fifth act – that's where we differ: our tragedy lives on in myth . The fact that we're still talking about it more than 40 years later is what makes football what it is," says museum director and playwright Manuel Neukirchner . "I've been involved in theater my whole life," laughs contemporary witness and former goalkeeper Toni Schumacher . "Seriously though: I actually did share the stage with Willi Millowitsch. But that was a comedy, folk theater. This is something completely different."

How do European modernist painting and football fit together? The blockbuster exhibition " In Motion – Art & Football, " running from May 27, 2024, to January 5, 2025 , explores this question across a thousand square meters. The exhibition's concept mirrors that of the European Championship itself: each participating nation of Euro 2024 is represented by at least one artist, highlighting the fundamental idea of a united Europe.
Visitors can look forward to more than 100 works of art , including exclusive pieces by René Magritte, Paul Klee, Banksy, Nicolas de Staël, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Willi Baumeister, Felix Nussbaum, Laurence Stephen Lowry, Robert Delaunay, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Umberto Boccioni. In addition, Josephine Henning will be the artist-in-residence for the exhibition . The former European football champion, who now works as an artist, will create a work of art at the Football Museum and conduct creative workshops as part of the museum's educational program.
"In a unique approach to mediation, painting explores the secrets of football. And conversely: football , with its aesthetics and dynamics, its rituals and contradictions, opens up entirely new avenues and possibilities for art ," explains Neukirchner. "Visitors will experience a previously unknown interplay between these worlds . The discovery of 20th-century European art through football and the deciphering of the phenomenon of football through the perspective of modern painting offer a new insight in two respects."
