New funding program for charging infrastructure

The Federal Ministry of Transport will launch a comprehensive funding program in April 2026 to expand private charging infrastructure in and around multi-family buildings.

A total of €500 million is available to bring the infrastructure to where it is needed daily. This is because a large proportion of people in Germany live in apartment buildings where parking spaces are currently inadequate – and this alone is often the reason why people decide against buying an electric car.

The new program therefore promotes the purchase and installation of charging infrastructure – including:

• Wallboxes (up to 22 kW)
• Technical equipment and cabling
• Mains connection
• Construction work (e.g. pipeline routes, civil engineering)
• Preparation of the parking spaces (pre-wiring)

To receive funding, certain minimum structural requirements must be met. This includes equipping at least six parking spaces with charging points. In addition, at least 20 percent of all existing parking spaces must be pre-wired to facilitate future electrification.

The following subsidies per parking space are possible

• 1.300 euros for prepared parking spaces without a wallbox
• 1.500 euros including installed wallbox
• 2.000 euros for charging points with bidirectional charging

The funding program is aimed at homeowners' associations (HOAs), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), private landlords, housing associations, and larger real estate companies. Please note: Applications for funding can be submitted from April 15th and the application period ends on November 10th, 2026.
