Masters and technicians start the new school year

Nearly 150 prospective master craftswomen and craftsmen as well as "state-certified technicians" have started their new school year at the Saarland Master and Technician School (SMTS).

For the new students of the SMTS, this marks the start of an intensive year, or rather two intensive years, at the school run by the Saarland Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HWK). "The Saarland Master Craftsman and Technician School is a joint flagship project of the Saarland Chamber of Skilled Crafts and the state government. Our goal is to establish vocational training as an equivalent alternative to academic education," said HWK President Helmut Zimmer at the official opening ceremony. "At the SMTS, precisely the practically oriented specialists and managers that Saarland's skilled trades urgently need are being trained," Zimmer continued. He especially hopes that many of the newly graduated master craftsmen and women will later become self-employed, taking over or starting their own businesses.

Full-time master craftsman preparation courses are offered in the following trades: automotive engineering, painting and varnishing, plumbing and heating, metal construction, carpentry, electrical engineering, precision mechanics, and hairdressing. The most popular courses are in automotive engineering, plumbing and heating, and electrical engineering. State-certified technicians receive further training in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering over a two-year period.
