Changes in tachograph law

From July 2026, a new regulation will apply in the EU for vehicles with a permissible total weight of 2,5 tons or more. The Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Trades (HWK) provides information on this.

According to Article 2(1)(aa) of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006, from 1 July 2026, cross-border goods transport or cabotage operations with vehicles whose maximum permissible mass, including trailers or semi-trailers, exceeds 2,5 tonnes are subject to the provisions of the Regulation on driving and rest times. This also generally entails the obligation to use a tachograph in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 165/2014, as amended.

However, exceptions may apply to craft businesses under Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006. This broader regulation would exempt a large proportion of craft transports between 2,5 and 3,5 tonnes from the obligation to use tachographs.
