The law promoting the repair of goods passed the Bundesrat (Federal Council) on July 10, 2026. The law transposes the EU directive into national law and is scheduled to come into force on July 31 for most purchase contracts concluded from the end of July 2026 onwards. Kurt Krautscheid, President of the Koblenz Chamber of Skilled Crafts, comments on the new "right to repair".
The right to repair sends a strong signal for greater sustainability and is also very good, valuable news for the skilled trades. Our businesses have the knowledge and experience to professionally repair products and significantly extend their lifespan. This conserves resources, avoids waste, and strengthens the regional economy.
Our more than 22.000 craft businesses in the Koblenz Chamber of Skilled Crafts district make a vital contribution to the circular economy every day. For them, repairing is not a new trend, but rather standard practice. Those who repair instead of discard not only strengthen climate protection, but also local craftspeople. It is therefore all the more important that this service is even more in demand and valued in the future.
The crucial point now is that the law also has an impact in everyday practice. Our businesses need fair access to spare parts, repair information, and diagnostic data. Then the right to repair will become a real benefit – for consumers, for the environment, and for local tradespeople.
