"Small hands, big future": Daycare center "Auf der Hohen Straße" wins state championship
The president of the Koblenz Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HwK), Kurt Krautscheid, presented the preschool children with their winner's plaque and repaired the roof of their playhouse with them.
Since he was already on site, Kurt Krautscheid (white shirt), president of the Chamber of Skilled Crafts and master roofer, didn't need much persuading: With great enthusiasm, he repaired the roof of the kindergarten playhouse, assisted by the preschool children as well as Denis Szymik and Fazel Khanan from the roofing company Salvatore Mannino. The goal of the annual competition is to give children hands-on experience with skilled trades. Nationwide , 370 daycare centers submitted entries, 30 of which came from Rhineland-Palatinate . As part of the competition, local craft businesses gave the children insights into their trades. In Diez, this was the roofing company Salvatore Mannino. Afterwards, the young tradespeople "processed" their experiences on posters. The Diez children's oversized artwork impressed the jury so much that they took first place in Rhineland-Palatinate. Eleven state champions were chosen nationwide. In addition to a winner's plaque, the Diez daycare center can look forward to prize money of 500 euros for a daycare festival or a project day focused on skilled trades.
Kurt Krautscheid, president of the Koblenz Chamber of Skilled Crafts , presented the young craftspeople and the daycare team in Diez with the winner's plaque. And because practical experience trumps theory, he, a master roofer himself, joined forces with two roofers from Diez to repair the roof of the playhouse in the daycare garden together with the preschool children.

"The entries impressively demonstrate how intensively the children engaged with skilled crafts, both in the practical work on-site and in the creative follow-up. It is particularly remarkable how naturally the children developed their own ideas and implemented them with a wide variety of materials," says Robert Wüst, Chairman of the organizer Aktion Modernes Handwerk eV (AMH). The next edition of this successful initiative is already being prepared for 2026/2027: The 14th competition round will begin in the fall.
