Empowering parents, strengthening trust

Children, teenagers and parents from the Eritrean community learned about the diverse opportunities of dual vocational training at the Campus Handwerk in Koblenz.

A recent event at the Koblenz Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HwK), the Rhineland-Palatinate Coordination Office for Vocational Training and Migration (KAUSA-Landesstelle RLP), and a volunteer association from the Eritrean community combined practical career guidance with targeted parental outreach at the Koblenz Craft Campus. Thirty-one children and young people, along with nineteen parents, accepted the invitation from the association and the KAUSA staff, who enjoy a high level of trust within the community as key multipliers.

At the start, the young aspiring craftspeople explored their skills in a workshop as painters and varnishers, metalworkers, road builders, or hairdressers, while their parents received helpful information about the German education system and the dual vocational training program. The opportunity to exchange information and ask questions in their native language fostered an open and trusting atmosphere, allowing participants to gather valuable information for their children's future careers. In a second workshop session, the children and teenagers learned about another of the four offered vocational fields – this time together with their parents, who had the opportunity to talk with instructors from the Koblenz Chamber of Skilled Crafts. They continued their dialogue about the diverse range of apprenticeships and career paths in the skilled trades, as well as available support services, during a shared lunch.

Background: KAUSA State Office Background The Rhineland-Palatinate regional office of KAUSA integrates young people with refugee or migrant backgrounds into dual training and advises companies on initial training. The project sponsors are the Chambers of Skilled Crafts of Koblenz, Rheinhessen, the Palatinate, and Trier. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Education Chains initiative at the Federal Institute for Vocational Training, as well as by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture, and is supported by the nationwide Coordination Office for Training and Migration.
