Therefore, the trade fair has always enjoyed great acceptance among exhibitors, who are optimistic about the year ahead. After all, many companies generate a large portion of their annual revenue at the fair, and one in two companies in the water sports industry expects business to be as good or even better in 2026 than in 2025. This is the result of a survey conducted by the association. Maritime economy Germany, in short VWMD.

However, as VWDM managing director Karsten Stahlhut complains, The industry is gradually beginning to feel the effects of demographic change. The number of new boat license holders hovers around 80.000 per year. The average age of boat owners is rising from 60 to 62 years. From 2015 to 2023 (more recent figures are not yet available), there was a demographic loss of 78.000 boat owners, which the 43.000 newcomers cannot compensate for. All of this also impacts new buyers, more than half of whom... 55 percent are between 20 and 40 years old.Only 12 percent are from the 50+ generation, which is why the industry needs to focus even more on attracting young talent.

Around 40.000 boats are sold in this country every year. From small sports boats to luxury yachts, 76 percent are bought used, which is not surprising given their lifespan of more than three decades. This contrasts with around 10.000 new boats, a third of which are open sports boats, popular with beginners, and up to 12 meters long.
