The name Avoca stands for many things that have to do with good fortune: vibrant landscapes, lush gardens, fun-loving clothing, and a genuine Irish Gold Rush.
Almost everything that glitters in Avoca could have a touch of gold. Or so the residents of this small valley in the southeastern heart of verdant County Wicklow, which has always been coveted as a land of wealth, thought.
Many aristocratic country estates were located where the three rivers Avoca, Avonmore, and Avonbeg meet. Artists, poets, and Ireland's intellectual elite also favored the landscape, so inspiring with its colors and wonderful play of light, immortalized by the bard Thomas Moore in the legendary song "Meeting of the Waters."
It was in 1795 that a few nuggets of gold were discovered in the Avoca River. For a brief time, gold rush sentiment took hold in this idyllic setting, and the Avoca became the Gold Mines River. At the same time, copper mining flourished in the surrounding area. To this day, you can set off gold panning with a friendly tour company and sift a carat or two from the Avoca before lunch. Original gold pans accompany you along the way, and the history of the brief Irish Gold Rush is illuminated during an entertaining guided tour. Anglers and birdwatchers are also drawn to this still-isolated habitat.

Avoca is closely associated with the most beautiful gardens and with a fashion line that could only have been created in such a floral dreamscape. Its story also begins in the early 18th century, when the first pre-industrial woollen mill went into operation near the riverside village of Avoca. Initially, tweeds and blankets were produced in natural dyes until the small company grew increasingly successful, impressing King George VI with its tweeds, supplying the Parisian designer Elsa Schiaparelli, and even Queen Elizabeth II with the most delicate baby blankets. The company has remained family-owned for over 200 years, and the mill and showroom are open to visitors. The Avoca Anthology label is recognized worldwide as a trademark for a completely playful, floral, and romantic fashion line made from the finest materials: vintage, shabby chic, as if it had fallen out of a candy bag.
