How small rituals can help
"What helps people during stressful periods is often surprisingly practical," the IKW (German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association) notes, referring to the results of its survey. Short breaks in everyday life can significantly improve mental well-being – these include walks or bike rides in nature, time with trusted people , but also personal care routines such as showering and moisturizing.
"The close connection between physical and mental well-being is also evident in the consequences of stress and overexertion. 45 percent of those surveyed say they feel stress directly in their bodies, for example through tension or sleep problems." At the same time, according to the study, 92 percent are convinced that mental well-being can be positively influenced through the body. 86 percent are certain that mental state can be stabilized through cosmetics and skincare rituals.
"Especially because many people are under stress today, such small rituals in everyday life can play a helpful role. They can help to structure daily life and create short moments of relaxation ," explains the industry association.
The results of the "Make-up your Mind" study are also confirmed by findings from the IKW study "Youth Without Makeup" 2024. Years ago, the industry association recognized the relevance of cosmetics and skincare routines for inner well-being based on its studies. Further IKW studies can be found here.
