Study: International trainees make an important contribution to the skilled trades

An ITB project is investigating how international trainees support skilled trades. Initial findings show that they can make a significant contribution, especially in trades with a shortage of young talent.

Against the backdrop of the increasing shortage of skilled workers and young talent, the Institute for Technology of Business Management at the German Institute for Skilled Crafts (itb) is analyzing how international trainees can contribute to securing the skilled workforce in the trades. The interim conclusion: Trainees from all over the world can make a significant contribution. However, their successful integration requires targeted support, clear framework conditions, and close cooperation between various stakeholders.

Advantage for the skilled trades through international skilled workers

The itb research project "Hand-In" is investigating the prerequisites for the successful integration of apprentices. The project aims to support craft organizations and businesses with scientifically sound findings and practical recommendations. Initial findings are based on interviews with employees of craft organizations and other stakeholders in the craft sector.

Different meanings depending on the industry

The results so far show that, from the respondents' perspective, recruiting international trainees – particularly in trades with a severe shortage of young talent – ​​can make a significant contribution . The importance varies depending on the sector: some sectors already rely on international trainees, while others currently have a sufficient number of domestic applicants.

Successful examples demonstrate that thorough preparation, designated contacts within the company, an open corporate culture , and utilizing existing support services are crucial success factors.
