A new Pixi book is called "Hanna and the Orthopedic Technology": The children's book, published by the Federal Guild Association, explains to the youngest children the work in medical supply stores and orthopedic technology workshops.
They measure ten by ten centimeters, always have 24 pages, and for many children across generations, they are the first books they ever hold. Pixi books have been published by Carlsen Verlag for over 70 years . According to the publisher, Pixi is even the most successful picture book series of all time.
Many children also learn about professions through books that they may not have heard of before. For example, orthopaedic technology will soon be introduced: The Pixi book "Hanna and Orthopaedic Technology" will be released on May 19th. With this book, the German Federal Guild Association for Orthopaedic Technology (BIV-OT) aims to bring the world of this healthcare craft into children's bedrooms.
The book was created in collaboration with Carlsen Verlag and will be presented at the OTWorld trade fair in Leipzig.
It tells the story in a child-friendly way, explaining how medical supply stores and orthopedic workshops make mobility and quality of life possible every day.
The Pixi book is distributed via the Federal Guild Association, its member guilds and partners from the industry – for example for school campaigns, open house days, trade fairs and patient communication in medical supply stores.
"Orthopedic technology helps people stay mobile and live independent lives every day. Despite this, many children – and adults too – have little knowledge of our craft," says Alf Reuter, President of the BIV-OT. "With the Pixi book, we bring orthopedic technicians into children's rooms as everyday heroes and show even the youngest children what makes this profession so special."
The story centers on Hanna. After an injury while playing football, she visits a medical supply store and discovers a world previously unknown to her. She watches as her hand is scanned and an orthosis is created – step by step, supported by modern technology and skilled craftsmanship.
On her journey, she also encounters other people who rely on assistive devices such as prostheses or medical compression stockings. Hanna watches in amazement and quickly realizes: These are people who help others to move better again and to live their everyday lives with joy.
In this way, the association aims to introduce children to the world of orthopaedic technology. And parents and grandparents learn along with them while reading aloud.
The story "Hanna and the Orthopedic Technology" is by Christiane Bartelsen , with illustrations by Nadine Hasselwander . The book received expert editorial support from Lars Jäger, a member of the BIV-OT board; Armin Zepf, a member of the BIV-OT vocational training committee; and Markus Eberlein, managing director of the Baden-Württemberg State Guild for Orthopedic Technology.
For years, institutions, associations, clubs, ministries, and industrial companies have used the Pixi book as a giveaway and commissioned their own Pixi books. The Pixi book on orthopedic technology will also not be available in bookstores .

Background: The Federal Guild Association BIV-OT represents 4.500 companies nationwide, which provide approximately 25 million assistive devices. These include bandages and compression stockings, as well as wheelchairs and assistive devices that support body parts (orthoses) or replace missing limbs (prostheses).
