Drones in the trades: Funding through the BG BAU (German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Construction Industry)

To improve workplace safety, the BG BAU (German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Construction Industry) is now also promoting the use of drones. Benjamin Hilmer, innovation and technology consultant at the Chamber of Skilled Crafts of the Palatinate, explains what is needed beforehand.

Especially in the skilled trades, drones can help avoid dangerous work at heights. Roofs, facades, or hard-to-reach areas can be inspected, documented, and measured from a safe distance. This technology can thus make a significant contribution to fall prevention. "I am particularly pleased that the BG BAU (German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Construction Industry) is now explicitly promoting drone technology from an occupational safety perspective. This acknowledges its practical relevance for skilled trades businesses," says Benjamin Hilmer , Innovation and Technology Consultant at the Chamber of Skilled Crafts of the Palatinate.

He advises businesses in the Palatinate Chamber of Skilled Crafts district on the use of drones and has worked with companies in various trades. This involves not only the technology itself, but also legal requirements, registration, and necessary documentation. "The legal and organizational aspects are essential – but in my view, a consultation shouldn't just focus on regulations and registration," Hilmer emphasizes. "That's why a practical component is also important. During a flight demonstration, businesses can see firsthand what's possible with a drone, where its limitations lie, and what benefits it can offer for their own trade."

BG BAU promotes purchase, driver's license and registration

The BG BAU ( German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Construction Industry ) supports the purchase of drones in classes C1 and C2, the A2 drone pilot's license, and registration with the Federal Aviation Office. Under certain conditions, craft businesses can receive 50 percent of the costs, up to a maximum of €2.000 per year – regardless of the amount of their BG BAU contribution. This also applies retroactively to January 1, 2026, for investments already made.

Help with drone use and funding: Craft businesses can contact their Chamber of Skilled Crafts for advice on drone use, application possibilities, and funding opportunities. The advisors also provide support with the application process.
