The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) has appointed a woman as its first president: Dr. Sandra Garbade succeeds Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hubert Esser, who has retired.

Dr. Sandra Garbade has been the new president of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) in Bonn since August 1st. She is the first woman to head the BIBB. Previously, the 54-year-old served for nine years as managing director of the Hamburg Institute for Vocational Education and Training (HIBB). Garbade succeeds Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hubert Esser , who retired at the end of June after 15 years at the helm of the BIBB. A core task of the BIBB is scientific research on vocational education and training.

Dr. Sandra Garbade (born in Bad Oeynhausen) holds a doctorate in business education and is a trained bank clerk. After working in credit institutions and management consulting, she joined the Hamburg school system in 2007, where she served as a vocational school teacher and department head. She subsequently assumed further management responsibilities at the HIBB (Hamburg Institute for Vocational Education and Training).

The new BIBB president said upon taking office: "To enable more people to participate in work and society through vocational education: This was the guiding principle during my time at the Hamburg Institute for Vocational Education and Training, and this will continue to be the guiding principle for my work as president of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training."

Digitalization and AI are changing vocational training

She was aware that she was taking office at a challenging time. "Demographic trends, the current economic conditions, and the significant changes in the world of work due to digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence give cause to examine the structures and processes in vocational education and training in order to ensure that they remain reliable and future-proof."
