Renovation sprint: Energy-efficient renovation of residential buildings in 22 days
The state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf, is planning a renovation sprint with the trades: Ronald Meyer's innovative method makes it possible to comprehensively renovate residential buildings within 22 days.
The concept idea of Renovation sprints comes from Civil engineer Ronald Meyer and has already been implemented in Cologne, Hamburg, and Leipzig. Now the renovation sprint is also to be rolled out in the Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia start. The goal is a Complete renovation of residential buildings within 22 working days, On Restructuring coach In this concept, a team of tradespeople is supported in its implementation. The coach organizes a complex building renovation involving all trades.
The first completed projects show that this ambitious time target is achievable. All processes are interconnected. And the building is quickly ready for occupancy again. Electricians, heating installers, roofers, carpenters, and all other trades are concentrated on one construction site and deployed in a coordinated manner.
The concept developed by Ronald Meyer (known from the RTL II series "Zuhause im Glück" and various ARD advice programs) is generating considerable interest in the construction and renovation trades: Around 60 tradespeople accepted an invitation from the state capital, the district craft association, and the Düsseldorf Chamber of Skilled Crafts to an information event. The state capital of Düsseldorf is supporting the introduction of the renovation sprint together with the Chamber of Skilled Crafts, the district craft association, the homeowners' association Haus & Grund, and the Düsseldorf Environmental Academy.
Achieving a higher renovation rate in existing buildings
➡️ The goal is to increase the rate of energy-efficient building renovations. This rate has stagnated at 0,7 percent per year for many years, even though the renovation of existing buildings plays a central role in achieving climate goals.
Over 15 tradespeople from the Düsseldorf area spontaneously expressed their interest in implementing the process during the event. They must adhere meticulously to a construction schedule broken down to the hour on the building site. Only in this way can the energy-efficient renovation be completed within the planned timeframe. The interested companies are taking on this challenge under the guidance of a renovation coach.
The trades' response to serial renovation
The skilled trades have high hopes for this: the renovation sprint could be their answer to serial renovation. "With serial renovation, efficiency comes from industrial prefabrication. The danger is that the business bypasses regional tradespeople. With the renovation sprint, this efficiency comes from within the company itself, and thus the added value remains in the region," they said. Frederic Ferber, Head of the Center for Environment, Energy and Climate of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Skilled CraftsAs part of its training program, the Environmental Academy will train female craftspeople in the renovation sprint and ensure that the added value remains with the local craft businesses.
The head of the Environmental Academy Düsseldorf, Lutz Denken, says: "We are delighted by the commitment of our Düsseldorf craft businesses to engage with the concept of the renovation sprint and to pursue further training accordingly. Renovations using the sprint method benefit everyone involved: the craft businesses and the homeowners through precisely adhered-to construction timelines, and the climate, because more buildings can be renovated in the same amount of time!"
What are the next steps? Am 5 November 2026 will be in EUREF Campus The state capital is offering an event for property owners. They can express their interest in a renovation sprint there. The first renovation sprint is scheduled to start in 2027.
