For Mitsubishi, the Outlander PHEV is the flagship of the model range. Now, the completely redesigned SUV is back in Europe, with prices starting at €42.008,40 net.
Outside, gigantic cacti greet visitors, while inside, the cactus-dominated landscape continues. Mitsubishi deliberately chose Desert City, a botanical cactus garden near Madrid with its unique ambiance, to celebrate the European premiere of the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, or PHEV for short . Decades of off-road and battery-electric experience have been incorporated into the fourth generation of this flagship model.
The new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is the continuation of Mitsubishi's model offensive, which follows a weak phase in the European market and in which the brand will present a fully electric SUV in 2025. With dimensions of 4.719 millimeters long, 1.862 millimeters wide, and 1.750 millimeters high, and a wheelbase of 2.704 millimeters, the Outlander is a classic representative of the D-segment.
Compared to its predecessor, the revised version offers more range (up to 86 kilometers purely electric), better acceleration, a quieter interior – and all this in a new, more dynamic design thanks to the latest hybrid technology.
In his speech, he follows the design philosophy of the I-Fu-Do-Do brand , which translates roughly as authentic and majestic . This is expressed in a powerful front and a sporty side design. It goes without saying that there are also allusions to older models such as the legendary Pajero.
The interior has also been given a new, more elegant touch, offering more space and comfort. The trunk capacity is 495 liters, expanding to a maximum of 1.422 liters. A new frameless rearview mirror provides improved visibility. The dashboard is digital and clearly laid out, and all driver assistance systems are on board, including ultrasonic, radar, and camera systems to support the driver and ensure safety. Engineers collaborated with Yamaha to develop a new acoustic system that delivers rich sound through eight speakers, or – in the Ultimate version – twelve.
The vehicle is powered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with two electric motors and a 22,7 kWh traction battery. As with its predecessors, power can also be drawn from the battery when needed. The front electric motor delivers 85 kW of power and 255 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 100 kW and 195 Nm. Together with the 2,4-liter gasoline engine, which delivers 100 kW and 203 Nm of torque, the system achieves a total output of 226 kW/306 hp.
There are three driving modes : all-electric, a series hybrid mode, and a parallel hybrid mode. The latter provides continuous support to the gasoline engine at high speeds. According to WLTP, fuel consumption should settle at 0,8 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 18 grams per kilometer. With a full tank and battery, this should be sufficient for a range of up to 844 kilometers.
The road tests are still pending; the first models are currently rolling off the production line and will then travel from Japan to Europe, arriving in showrooms here starting in February 2025. They are already available to order, with a starting price of €42.008,40 net.
