ZVEH: Don't lose sight of climate goals

Craft policy

At the turn of the year, ZVEH President Stefan Ehinger calls for a decisive climate policy and a rapid pace in the energy transition.

The President of the Central Association of German Electrical and Information Technology Crafts Stefan Ehinger of the ZVEH (Central Association of German Electrical and Information Technology Trades) hopes for a turnaround in the economy in the new year. "For this to happen, the crucial groundwork must finally be laid and the social security systems must also be reformed," he says. So far, the "autumn of reforms" announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has not had the desired effect.

"Although the economic crisis has not yet had a major impact on the electrical trades – the business climate index even showed a slight increase in the autumn economic survey – this cannot disguise the fact that the mood in our trade has become significantly more pessimistic," explains Ehinger.

Staying on course with climate goals

Opportunities have been missed with regard to the energy transition. This includes the failure to implement a reduction in electricity prices for everyone. Electrification and digitalization have great potential. To fully realize this potential, the federal government must stay the course regarding its climate targets. It must not allow itself to be driven by far-right forces.

Ehinger: "Because climate change is not an ideological figment of the imagination, but very real, as recent natural events such as the California wildfires or Hurricane Melissa have shown. Therefore, the decision to make Germany climate-neutral should be determined by reason, not party affiliation." A successful transformation requires a decisive climate policy with clear parameters.

ZVEH demands a "clear CO₂ pricing policy"

The ZVEH (Central Association of German Electrical and Information Technology Trades) is calling for a "clear CO₂ pricing policy." "Those who continue to rely on climate-damaging fossil fuels should feel the consequences in their own wallets. While a change in thinking begins in the mind, the financial aspect can be an important factor in making a decision," emphasizes Ehinger. The "ingredients" for a successful climate, building, and mobility transition are already available: innovative solutions and intelligent systems.

Skilled workers who possess the know-how for the digital future and experience in handling future technologies, and who understand how to network highly complex systems. And climate-conscious tradespeople who pool their expertise and manpower to jointly make Germany climate-neutral and digital. 2026 will be a pivotal year for the electrical trades. "Our sector is already actively shaping the future."
