The North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Labor is funding the "AI.Workshop Training NRW" project with approximately 1,3 million euros. The aim is to strengthen young people's skills in the use of artificial intelligence in vocational training.

The University of Siegen, in collaboration with the North Rhine-Westphalian Business Education Association, is investigating how artificial intelligence (AI) can effectively support trainees in their learning and work, and relieve the burden on training staff in their daily work, using ten model companies from various sectors in North Rhine-Westphalia. The "AI Workshop for Vocational Training NRW" project will run for two years. The aim is to develop AI solutions that are precisely tailored to the needs of vocational training.

A joint development process between science and industry is being launched, in which companies, trainees, and training staff will explore where and how AI can create added value in vocational training. The goal is to develop transferable AI agents for the successful implementation of AI in vocational training, which can also be used by other companies for their own further development. These agents will later be rolled out nationwide so that as many training companies as possible can benefit.

Using AI for the benefit of trainees and businesses

"With the AI.Workshop Training NRW project, we are taking another important step towards the use of artificial intelligence in vocational training. I find it very positive that the project involves very concrete and active work with young people and staff in companies. This ensures that AI is used in a practical, responsible way and in the best interests of both trainees and companies, because the successful use of artificial intelligence in training can only be achieved together," says Labor Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU). 

"With the AI.Workshop Training NRW, we are bringing AI to where training is actually implemented: directly into companies. The University of Siegen and the Education Center of the North Rhine-Westphalian Economy are bringing science and business practice together so that trainers, trainees and researchers can jointly develop and test practical AI solutions – with the aim of making the insights gained usable for many companies in North Rhine-Westphalia," adds Johannes Pöttering, Managing Director of unternehmer nrw and Metall NRW.

At the same time, "AzubiTrain – Your Future with AI," a statewide AI training program designed to teach young people the fundamentals of AI application, is launching. This program, a collaboration between the state government and the Association for the Promotion of Youth and Social Work , will be available free of charge to all trainees and training staff in North Rhine-Westphalia starting in September at azubitrain.nrw.
