More building permits for apartments in North Rhine-Westphalia
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the number of building permits issued by building authorities for apartments increased for the first time in five years.
Building authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia issued building permits for over 44.900 new apartments last year. This represents an increase of 10,7 percent (plus 4.354 apartments) compared to 2024, according to the State Statistical Office.
The number of approved apartments in newly constructed buildings rose by 9,6 percent to 36.752. The number of new housing units created through construction work on existing buildings increased by 16,2 percent.
The number of building permits for new single-family homes increased by 21,4 percent. Two-family homes saw an increase of 2,5 percent, and the number of new apartments in multi-family buildings (excluding dormitories) rose by 4,8 percent in 2025.
Furthermore, building permits were issued last year for nearly 2.300 apartments in dormitories. An additional 731 apartments are planned for non-residential buildings (mixed-use buildings that are predominantly not residential).
