Infrastructure Future Act: ZDB demands implementation of planned accelerations

The construction industry is calling for the swift implementation of the planned acceleration measures for federal highways under the Infrastructure Future Act. Conflicts of interest between traffic and nature conservation must be resolved early on.

On the occasion of an upcoming hearing on the law in German Bundestag demands Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDB) calls on policymakers to quickly implement the planned acceleration measures for federal highways.

"The law creates crucial approaches to make planning and approval procedures more efficient and legally secure, in particular by legally enshrining the overriding public interest for priority transport infrastructure projects," says ZDB Managing Director Felix Pakleppa.

However, the legislature still needs to add a statutory cut-off date. Otherwise, new technical or legal requirements could delay ongoing procedures. The ZDB warns against reviving the Natural Areas Requirements Act, which was pushed through under the previous coalition government, under the new name "Act to Strengthen Natural Infrastructure."

Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) announced the new version on the occasion of German Nature Conservation Day. Pakleppa: "We support the protection of natural infrastructure, but at the same time we must ensure that the accelerating effect of the Infrastructure Future Act for urgently needed transport projects is maintained."

Planning acceleration and nature conservation should not be pitted against each other.
