At their meeting, the presidents of the East German chambers of skilled crafts adopted a joint declaration. In it, they call on politicians and society to understand skilled crafts as a task for society as a whole.
In Halle an der Saale, the presidents of the Chambers of Skilled Crafts from the German states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia met to discuss current issues. These included regional and international challenges, current political developments in Saxony-Anhalt, and forecasts for future business figures. The discussion culminated in a joint declaration by the chamber representatives, calling on policymakers and society to understand skilled crafts as a responsibility shared by all of society.
Understanding craftsmanship as a task for society as a whole
East German skilled trades are more than just an economic factor. They ensure supply, training, jobs, and social cohesion in both urban and rural areas. To ensure this contribution can continue in the future, reliable political frameworks, strong vocational education, and clear recognition of skilled trades as a responsibility of society as a whole are essential.
In the 13 chamber districts, 168.000 businesses operate. These generate a turnover of €100 billion and employ 850.000 people. As trainers, employers, and taxpayers, craft businesses are a vital component of the regional economy. Craftspeople can be found in virtually every town and village in our country. Beyond their economic importance, the support these predominantly small and medium-sized enterprises provide to the community should not be underestimated. Craftspeople actively participate in sports, local clubs, cultural activities, and local politics, contributing to the well-being of their fellow citizens.
At the same time, businesses face enormous challenges. These arise from global, but also national or regional problems.
One of the most pressing tasks for the skilled trades is securing their future by ensuring a sufficient number of young professionals – both in apprenticeships and in the qualification process to become a master craftsman. This requires binding educational policy decisions: comprehensive and mandatory career guidance in all types of schools, a stable network of vocational schools, and adequate support for apprentices who have to stay overnight at their vocational school location.
A strong skilled trades sector is indispensable for supply, training, and social cohesion in the regions. Anyone who wants to ensure equal living conditions must strengthen the skilled trades – politically, economically, and socially.
